An FAQ on Ransomware & Business
At SSI, we’re always talking with our clients about the most recent threats to their business data. As their technology partner, we also listen to their fears – what keeps them up at night when it comes to IT. One answer that comes back time and time again – ransomware.
Ransomware, or malicious software designed to block access to a computer system until a sum of money has been paid, has been in the news for the past couple of years. Enterprise and government organizations have fallen prey to schemes that have crippled them for weeks in severe cases.
While ransomware and malware threats aren’t to be taken lightly, education is the first step toward prevention so we put together a quick FAQ with some questions that we received.
What types of businesses are at risk of a ransomware attack?
While big, enterprise organizations make the biggest headlines, any business that deals with internet transactions or records are in danger of an attack.
What is SSI’s policy when it comes to ransomware, generally?
We encourage all of our clients to stay protected with up to date antivirus definitions, up to date firewalls, and OpenDNS. In addition, the number 1 solution that will save the day in most cases is a great backup system. We deploy a number of solutions that are expertly tailored to our clients’ needs.
What are some of those solutions?
OpenDNS, WebRoot are a few. Also, creating File System Resource Management policies on your customers’ servers to detect the infection and stop it before it spreads. But there is any number of architectures and solutions that we could deploy.
How is SSI helping client mitigate the risk associated with ransomware attacks?
We make sure all of our clients have a backup system that takes hourly snapshots of their data. If they do not, we highly recommend that they obtain one from us. Instead of wasting a day of work in case of an infection, most of our clients can revert back to the last hour backup and continue working.
